The Twenty-Something Series: Goals and Resolutions for 2019

New year, not-so-new me. In this post, I share a few of my goals and resolutions for the year ahead - everything from blogging to seeing more of my friends!

Last year was a crazy one for me, and I'm hoping to make 2019 just as mad and brilliant.

And, naturally, with it being that time of year, it means I've got a few goals and resolutions for the year ahead. I'm trying to journal more and have some personal, creative and career goals for the year in there, but I've picked five of my biggest ones to share on my blog.

1. Read more

I didn't read an awful lot of books last year. My to-read list is always growing, but this is something I really want to get back into this year. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy reading, but the past year - it just didn't really happen, for one reason or another.

I'm especially keen to read a few more non-fiction books on adulting so if you have any recommendations, please let me know in the comments, or Tweet them to me @Reekles!

My sister got me An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green for Christmas, so I'm going to kick this resolution off with that one.

2. Secure a permanent job at work

Technically, I'm on a fixed-term contract as part of the graduate scheme I'm on. I mentioned in my last post that I submitted a job application just before Christmas to do my current role on a permanent basis, instead of as a placement as part of the grad scheme. This one is much more a goal than a resolution, but I'm pretty determined to make this happen! I'm hoping to hear back about an interview in the next week or so. Fingers crossed it'll be good news soon...

3. Finish my latest Work In Progress by Valentine's Day

Because why not pick an arbitrary date to work towards?

I'd hoped to finish this particular WIP before Christmas, but as my new book is set in summer, it was pretty difficult to get into the right headspace to work on it when I was busy watching Christmas movies. I need a few intense writing sessions to get it finished, I think, as it's at 40,000 words already - and I tend to bash out a good few thousand words at a time if I give myself a few hours dedicated to writing. It always helps me to have a deadline, so let's hope I meet this one!

4. Get back into the blogging game!

Honestly, I have no idea why I dropped the ball on this in the last few months. I was posting a lot in the first half of 2018, but after that, when I was focusing on moving once again, holidays, new books, or just binge watching seasons of Ru Paul's Drag Race, I ended up not posting very often. One of my friends came to stay for New Year's and asked when I'd be starting The Twenty-Something Series back up again, so, ya know, hint taken.

I've got a long list of ideas for posts sketched out though, and am ready to get back into it this year! I've even put together my blog calendar for 2019 and filled it up until April already. (Just have to write and schedule those posts now!)

As a little teaser: I've got a couple of posts relating to The Kissing Booth movie, some around social media (mine felt like it blew up last year!) and around office life, to name a few.

5. See my friends more

Definitely a resolution I'm determined to keep.

I spent the first three months of 2018 in Durham, about as far away from any of my friends as I could get without actually leaving the country. It felt like a lot of my weekends after that were spent visiting my family, trying to do some book-related work (I'm totally including my trip to Sao Paulo in that), or moving. (God, moving took so much time. I do not want to see any packing tape or cardboard boxes for a good long while again now.)

I'm not expecting to move again any time soon for work, which is a relief, so it would be great to spend some more weekends going to see my friends, or having them up to visit. I mean, I live near Cadbury World now. What better way to spend a few hours with mates than in a chocolate factory?

What are some of your New Year's resolutions, and goals for 2019? Let me know in the comments.

And I'd love to hear what you'd like to see more of on my blog this year - any specific writing advice, or anything about adulting? Comment or else you can let me know on Twitter @Reekles!

  1. I have so many goals for 2019 that it would take too long to share them all. HOWEVER, one of my favorite nonfiction books of the last few years is the Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson. I read it on my honeymoon (we spent one entire day shut in our boardroom on a cruise, hungover, reading and watching films), and I swear I sobbed. I've recommended it to so many people, including random strangers in airports, because I love it that much.
