The Twenty-Something Series: 5 places at the top of my travel bucket list

I've been lucky enough to travel a lot for my day job and my work as an author - but there are still a few places I'd love to see! In this post, I share the top five locations on my travel bucket list.

I don't consider myself a 'traveller'. I have friends who go away to all kinds of places on holidays and go exploring and feel a little wistful - but then I remind myself that I've been to Cape Town, Toronto, New York, Brazil... and realise that actually, I have travelled quite a bit.

I think the difference is that a lot of these trips have been 'working' ones. Whirlwind weekends for book signings in Brazil, WattCon in New York, weeks in Germany spent at the actual office there... I don't generally go to all the tourist traps, but usually try to squeeze a few in where I can!

(Psst - check out this post on how to make the most of travelling for work!)

Don't get me wrong - I've been so incredible lucky to be able to visit all these places, and have really enjoyed them all.

That said: there are a few other places I'd love to visit some day - so since this week has been pretty travel-themed on my blog, in this post, I'll be sharing the top five places on my travel bucket list!

1. Italy

Oh, man. I would LOVE to go to Italy. Especially Rome. I'd just love to go and explore all the culture there, try the food (and the wine). Venice always seems spectacular, too. Italy is one of the first (and, okay, only) places I learned about in school geography lessons and it's always cropping up in romance novels. The Colosseum, the museums, the Leaning Tower of Piza, the canals of Venice, the coast, Juliet's Balcony... So much. So, so much. I just think it looks like such a beautiful country with so much to see and do!

2. Los Angeles

This was always a place I thought it'd be cool to visit, but I don't think I ever really thought about it until The Kissing Booth came out. Most of the filming we did for that was in Cape Town, and since I was only on set for a short while, I didn't see any of the filming done in LA. But damn, wouldn't it be cool to see it in real life, instead of on the screen in a movie? Venice Beach, Rodeo Drive the Hollywood Sign... Tell me that doesn't sound awesome.

3. Amsterdam

No, I know, I've never been to Amsterdam. Like, everybody has been there, it seems. I know. (Okay, I passed through the airport once, but I'm not counting it.) I genuinely think part of why I'd love to go is down to The Fault in Our Stars - and partly to the FOMO I feel whenever I see friends from uni or work going. And the flight is only an hour or so - it seems crazy that I've not been yet! Heck, I don't even like beer, but even the Heineken Factory looks like so much fun. It looks like a beautiful city that's just crying out for me to go visit.

4. Paris

I've done a few trips to Disneyland Paris (and am going back again this year for New Year's with a mate I've known for about twenty years!) but I've never gone to Paris itself. Notre Dame, the Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre, the River Seine... Like Italy, I feel like there's so much culture (not to mention good food and wine) to see and experience in Paris. Plus, since I speak some French, it feels like exactly the sort of place I should go some day!

5. Edinburgh

Somewhere a little closer to home! (Well, alright, probably not - it's probably just as quick for me to jump on a plane to Amsterdam or Paris as to Edinburgh!) I've actually never been to Scotland and would so love to go to Edinburgh - maybe even head there for Edinburgh Festival one day, since that always looks totally incredible when I see people talking about it on Twitter and Instagram!

Have you ever been to any of these places? I'd love to know what you thought - and I'd love to know what's on your travel bucket list, too! Let me know over on Twitter @Reekles, or in the comments below.
